That article about Nüshu reminded me of the emergence of the Japanese hiragana alphabet. It, too, was used by women who had not learn to write. They used simplified Chinese characters that started with a certain syllable to represent that syllable. That turned into poetry and things like that.
Big difference is that the men did get into that sweet phonetic writing after some time too.
