I like the quote, but I don't understand its relevance. Can you explain?

It's a catch-all Russian quote the English equivalent of which (as far as disparate cultures can have equivalent quotes) is "O, reason not the need! " More applicable in this case than in many others because the traditional assumed experience of romantic love (which Ms. Penny seems to share) is a lot like stigmata - obvious, painful, involving bodily fluids and inconvenience, and yet somehow desirable. The overall point is that the question of whether love is necessary is somewhat irrelevant while it is desired.
